Civil Worker

The Opportunity

We are always interested in hearing from people who want to be part of our team. Whether you are an experienced plant operator, civil worker, or looking to grow your skills across both areas, there are opportunities to contribute to major projects across Tasmania.


What You’ll Do

As part of our crews, you’ll support the delivery of civil projects across the state. This may include:

  • Operating plant and machinery such as excavators, loaders, rollers, dozers, graders, skid steers, and water carts.
  • Assisting with general civil tasks, including concreting, pipe laying, formwork, levelling, and traffic management.
  • Working safely, following procedures, and supporting project efficiency as part of a team.


What You’ll Bring

To be considered, you’ll need:

  • An unrestricted driver’s licence.
  • A Construction Induction Card (White Card).
  • A willingness to travel across Tasmania for project work.

Business Development Engineer

Permanent – Full Time position

Shaw Contracting is seeking a motivated Business Development Engineer to join our Business Development team in Launceston.

This role is ideal for a technically minded engineer who enjoys analysing designs, solving problems, working with data, and completing tender preparation—while still wanting clear pathways into on-site engineering, project delivery and future project management roles.

You’ll gain exposure to the entire project lifecycle: from estimating and bidding, through to project commencement planning—giving you a strong foundation for a long-term civil engineering career.

About the Role

As a Business Development Engineer, you will:

  • Interpret drawings, specs and scope to support accurate estimating and tender development.
  • Contribute engineering insight into methodology, buildability and cost-effective delivery.
  • Assist with tender handover and support project teams during job commencement.
  • Work closely with the Tender Manager and Business Development Manager to help secure new work.
  • Use modern digital tools (Excel, AI tools, PowerPoint/Canva/InDesign) to create high-quality technical content, visuals and analysis.
  • Build foundational relationships with engineers, subcontractors, suppliers and delivery teams.

The Opportunity

Shaw Contracting is embarking on an exciting phase of expansion in Tasmania’s North West, and we’re looking for a motivated Project Engineer to join our team for an 18-month fixed-term contract.

Based primarily in the North West region, you’ll play a key role in delivering high-impact civil infrastructure projects while working alongside experienced Project Managers and Supervisors. This position offers genuine exposure to diverse project types, hands-on technical leadership, and the opportunity to make your mark on some of Tasmania’s most significant infrastructure developments.

With our strong project pipeline and commitment to developing our people, this contract role provides a clear pathway to future opportunities within our growing business.

What You’ll Do

  • Provide technical and engineering support across a variety of civil projects.
  • Interpret drawings, standards, and specifications to guide site execution.
  • Prepare and monitor ITPs, quality records and site documentation.
  • Assist Project Managers with planning, budgets, schedules and reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with WHS, environmental and quality management systems.
  • Liaise with clients, subcontractors, and consultants on technical matters.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement and innovation in project delivery.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
  • 2–4 years’ post-graduate engineering experience in civil construction.
  • Demonstrated capability in road, dam, irrigation, mining or infrastructure projects.
  • Proven ability to interpret drawings and manage site documentation.
  • Working knowledge of WHS requirements and compliance processes.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and exposure to project management software.
  • Current Australian Driver’s Licence (essential).
  • Highly regarded: Professional registration with Engineers Australia, First Aid/CPR, and Tasmanian project exposure.
